A cup of tea, a notebook, and five small questions that remind me who I am, especially on the days the world forgets to notice.
Some days the world is busy. Very busy. Everyone is rushing, scrolling, replying, running late, and somewhere in all that noise it’s easy to feel like a background character in your own life.
I’ve had plenty of those days. And over the years, I’ve found my favourite way back. It isn’t a grand plan. It’s a notebook, a cup of tea (made by me, obviously; nobody else gets it right), and a few honest questions.
There’s something quietly magical about writing things down. Thoughts that seemed tangled in your head suddenly sit up straight on paper. Some even turn out to be rather wise. Who knew?
So here are five questions I love. Try one, try all five, or try one while pretending to work. I won’t tell.
- What made me smile today, even a little?
A song on the radio. A child waving from a car window. Tea that turned out exactly right. Small joys count. In fact, they’re usually the ones holding everything together. - When did I last feel truly understood?
Think of that person, that conversation, that moment. Then ask yourself what made it special. You’ll learn a lot about what fills your heart. - What do I wish someone would ask me?
Now ask it yourself, and answer generously. You might discover you’ve had a great deal to say all along. - Who could I make feel seen today?
This one is my favourite. A quick message, a genuine compliment, a “how are you, really?” It takes thirty seconds and can brighten someone’s whole week. Bonus: it brightens yours too. - What would my best friend say about me right now?
Not about your marks, your job title, or how many likes your last post got. The real things. Your kindness, your courage, that ridiculous laugh. Write down at least three. Then believe them.
There’s no right way to do this. Some days you’ll fill two pages. Some days you’ll write one line and get distracted by a sitar playlist. Both are perfectly good days.
What matters is that, for a few minutes, you showed up for yourself. And you deserve that.
Happy writing,
Amie
P.S. Every story in The Unseen Thread ends with a question just like these. If you try one, write to me at booksofamie@gmail.com. I’d genuinely love to hear what you discovered.
